Kah Flicks the Switch for Full Rocket Power

ROCKET Commander delivered the ultimate farewell gift with a richly deserved win in yesterday’s feature Penny Edition Stakes at Morphettville. A deal struck around a month ago by David Mee from Pinhook Bloodstock meant the $100,000 Listed feature was Rocket Commander’s final start for her current group of owners, including co-trainers Wayne Francis and Glen Kent.

The transfer papers will be lodged tomorrow and she is likely to have her final run for her new connections in the $100,000 Balaklava Cup on August 31, still under the care of Francis and Kent, before being retired to the breeding barn.

“We’ll have to have a chat again tonight but Glen and Wayne have done an enormous job with her andI’d certainly think the expectation would be to run her at Balaklava,” Mee said.

Rocket Commander certainly saved the best until last, thanks to a confident ride by ace jockey Jamie Kah.m The five-year-old mare, who was among the favoured runners at $6.50, worked into a prominent position then pounced when Kah asked her for the supreme effort halfway down the home straight.

Rocket Commander has been a wonderful advertisement for the emerging Francis-Kent training partnership, which is quickly establishing itself as one of the most effective stables in South Australia.

Her record now stands at six wins and 14 placings from 32 starts, with earnings of just shy of $250,000.
