Special mention to grand old campaigner Lucky Girl who retired after a front-running victory in the Paris Longchamp Racecourse (1650m) at Happy Valley in May.
Lucky Girl (7g Onemorenomore – Bani Yas by Zabeel) bowed out with a record of 6 wins in 46 starts earning HK 6.99 million (AUD 1.31 million) for owner Victor Cheng Hok Hung. A horse that very much batted above the expected average, he was a $1,500 graduate from Baramul Stud at the 2013 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale.
Trained by Mick Mair, he impressed on debut when runner-up at the Sunshine Coast on Boxing Day in 2014. Subsequently purchased by PBI for a six-figure sum, he was one of those horses that just kept on keeping on.
The HKJC has recalibrated the import criteria in Hong Kong and the new rating required for raced horses will be HK68, as opposed to the old rating of HK70. This basically means a slightly bigger pool of eligible horses that have had less racing under their belt. The prices paid will now most likely level out.
The 2019-20 Hong Kong season commences at Sha Tin on Sunday, September 1.
