ARGENTINA and CHILE
Dave has ventured to South America twice in the last six months.
The motivations for doing so were numerous but, as so often happens when you travel to new places, exciting opportunities can present themselves as you meet new people and see new things, and this has certainly turned out to be the case.

The first trip was more an exploratory trip to both Chile and Argentina, and in the company of US friend Jesse Davison we were fortunate enough to be hosted by our friends JP Sullivan and Christian Benavente from Sullivan Bloodstock in Chile and then Ezequiel Valle in Argentina who took us to view some of the leading Stud Farms and training stables in and around both Santiago and Buenos Aries.

Both countries have a long and proud history of producing quality racehorses that have performed at the highest level and it’s almost offensive to highlight only so few in this newsletter but, recognisable horses that have originated in South America and performed on the international stage are horses such as champion racehorse Forli (sire of Special, dam of Nureyev and grand dam of Sadlers Wells), elite US stallion Candy Ride, recent Breeders Cup winner Blue Prize and more familiar to us down under, the quality racehorses and stallions Hussonetand Husson

Some of the observations made on the two visits have been (in no particular order):

  • The environment for raising horses is first class. You'd probably call it a more natural and rawer environment than we do things here in Australia but the land quality, pastures, husbandry etc. provide a wonderful mix for growing out happy healthy, fast, durable horses.

  • Both Santiago and Buenos Aries are on a similar latitude to Sydney and Auckland, so it was no real surprise that both the air quality and even plant life and vegetation were quite similar to what we see here at home

  • The thoroughbred breed overall appear to be a lot more durable than many countries I have visited and I’d say there are numerous reasons for that but, in part this is due to the breeders being a lot more selective as to what animals they breed to start with and the fact their outlook and race programming is tailored more towards 3yo racing and older (as opposed to early 2yo speed).

  • Their bloodlines offer predominately Danehill outcross lines

  • Obviously the female families are very South American(centric) but there is a lot of excellent, recognisable blood in behind these families especially when mares are covered with the shuttle stallions they get from the US or Europe (i.e. Scat Daddy shuttled to Chile for many years and Mastercraftsman was just finishing a covering season at Haras Firmamento when I visited in Dec).

  • The prize money levels are VERY low compared to Australia but at the same time the training costs with top line trainers are around 70-80% less of what it costs to keep a horse in work with a leading Aussie metro stable.

  • The single biggest hurdle and handbrake to buying/selling/trading horses out of South America is the quarantine restrictions between (any country in) South America and either Aus or NZ. There is a little bit more to it but, any horse coming out of there intending to travel to Aus or NZ must spend at least 6 months in an approved country in between times.

So with all of the above in mind, Dave took the gamble and returned to Buenos Aries, Argentina in March for the premier yearling sale run by two of the leading Stud Farms Haras Vacacion and Haras Abelongo where 109 premier yearlings were on offer and he was delighted to secure two beautiful yearling fillies for a Singapore based syndicate.

US$125,000 was paid for a daughter of South America’s most young exciting stallion Fortify (Distorted Humor). Named Joy Rosita, she a sister to the Grade 1 winner Roman Joy and a daughter of the Grade 2 winner The Rosy (Hennessy)

Also purchased was an In The Dark (Mutakddim) filly named Laboreana, for US$38,000. She is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Lenovo (Roman Ruler)

Both fillies will remain in Argentina to be broken and educated and when the time is right they will be sent to Singapore in 12 to 18 months’ time. If either can gallop and show potential, we will then strongly consider bringing them to Australia.
Dave plans to return (hopefully) in the not too distant future to further other opportunities.
Stay tuned!

This Dissident filly was purchased for $100,000 at the 2020 Easter yearling sales and a rare opportunity has become available to share a part of the lease in an absolute rock star of a horse.
She has been broken in and in the system of leading Sydney trainer Brad Widdup
Both BOBS and Inglis Race Series payments have been made by the owner!!
A wonderful opportunity to become involved in all that racing has to offer with no upfront costs.
By the horse of the year Dissident from a wonderful European family. She is also the half sister to multiple 2019 stakes performer Lucicello.

Genuinely only a smaller shareholding left so please contact Dave Mee ASAP for further details.
